Down Arrow 1.0 - Introduction

Hema : Here we have invited a guest who will be giving us some very important information. Also, our topic today is primarily concerning the youth of India.

Yet, people of all ages can listen to this, and they should, because everybody can utilize it. Now you must be wondering what our topic is.

Sometimes to send messages to faraway places in a split second, when we have to converse with someone, or for our work, which is the most important priority; then we make use of it.

Yes, the Computer. In today's hectic life, to work without it, is very difficult. Therefore to clear many doubts, we have invited the Director of an IT company. Mr. Mahesh, we welcome you to our studio.

MK : Hemaji, I thank you for inviting me to your studio and I would like to greet everyone listening to me.

Down Arrow 2.0 - Effect of IT on Employment Opportunities in India.

Hema : Maheshji, In a country like India, where the population is so large and distributed, everybody is searching for employment. When the computer was introduced, the people felt it was a virus in their lives, or a foe. What is the position of the computer today ?

MK : Hemaji, whatever you are talking of was the situation 20-25 years ago.

Hema : Yes, Sir.

MK : Today, it is said that the IT industry of India leads the 3 E's of India as - E for Education, E for Employment and E for Economy.

The IT industry of India is famous worldwide. It is correct that in the short term; wherever earlier manual activities in many institutions or departments of companies get computerised, there are some job reductions.

But it has been proved that after computerisation, the customers of these institutions or departments begin to receive the work or output from these organisations in a more efficient, more accurate and more economical manner. Hence, overall productivity goes up.

For example, many years ago, we developed a software solution for a very large fish exports company of India. In this company's accounting department, before computerisation, 30 people would work manually .

This company would buy the fish from the local fishermen daily. Because of non-computerised manual accounts, The fishermen's dues would remain outstanding for upto three years.

Being done manually, there would be mistakes committed with subsequent manual corrections, re-corrections and so on.

As a result of these problems, there used to be hostility and friction between the company and the fishermen.

Ever since we computerised the accounts activities of this organisation, the 30 people in-charge of managing accounts got reduced to 10 people who were taught to operate the computer.

Due to the computerisation project, the work that would earlier take 3 years to complete was getting done in a month.

Hence, these poor fishermen received their money faster, and their trust and goodwill in the company grew manifold.

I have given this small example out of many more.

When computers are introduced, there is a reduction of jobs initially, but in good companies, those people who are unemployed are then given suitable training and knowledge and are put to work elsewhere.
