Changeable ERP Systems ?

Can ERP Software deliver on the dream of Changeable Systems ?

Most organizations find out that once they have invested time, money and resources in an ERP Software, the business and market realities have changed.

To effectively handle the same, Information Systems also have to change.

Ultimately, it is the changeability of Systems that determines it's long-term utility to an organization.

In fact, in many cases, it becomes the essential bedrock of survival for an organization.

ERP Software As an Essential Infrastructure

On our website's ERP Consulting page, it is mentioned right upfront that ERP is becoming an essential infrastructural building block of any Organization's IT Facilities.

There was a question asked on one of the forums as to whether this is really so.

While I do not have any independent research data to back up the above statement, it is my gut feel that as we go ahead, just as organizations today wonder as to how they did without computers a few years ago; in the future, organizations will wonder as to how they did without an integrated ERP software.

Of course, it will not be available in it's current shape and form.

But as a service.

Just like other software services.

IERM Software instead of ERP ... More

The 'I' in the IERM could also stand for 'Integrated'.

Hence Integrated-Intra-Inter Enterprise Resource Management sounds suitable, though a little complicated.

ERP Software - Time for a New Name ?

The name ERP - Enterprise Resource Planning - seems to my mind a bit out-dated and behind the times and way beyond the current scope of ERP technologies.

The scope of an ERP solution is not just restricted to either the 'Enterprise' or only the 'Planning' aspect.

Maybe ERP should have a new name - IERM - Intra/Inter Enterprise Resource Management.

where 'Intra' refers to Within an Organization and 'Inter' Between Organizations.

Instead of Planning, let's use the word 'Management' instead.

IERM conveys much much more than just plain old ERP.
